Disaster Preparedness - We help people to be ready for the next disaster by providing information and education. This includes handing out literature on preparedness topics, speaking to school classrooms, community groups and civic organizations. It also includes coordinating our preparedness activities with other agencies which also respond to disasters. Volunteers go to classrooms, participate in safety fairs, speak to groups and coordinate with other agencies.
Disaster Relief - When a disaster happens - whether it’s one family or 100 families, we provide immediate assistance in the form of food and shelter. This could include providing a motel voucher and food voucher to one family after their house burns down, or opening a mass shelter for several hundred people when the Pajaro River threatens to flood. Volunteers on our Disaster Action Team respond to disasters within 2 hours of notification, whether during the day or in the middle of the night. Other volunteers stand ready to provide follow-up case management help.

Health and Safety Services - Join the American Red Cross in teaching preparedness skills to our community. As a CPR/AED/First Aid instructor, you will help save countless lives by training others in lifesaving skills. This position will require public speaking skills, as well as clear communication skills. Teaching experience is not required. Training will be provided.
Armed Forces Emergency Services - When a family member needs to get in touch with a member of the military, we can be the link to provide worldwide communications in an emergency. Volunteers carry pagers so that this service can be provided 24 hours a day.
Blood Services - The Red Cross provides life-saving blood to our local hospitals. This blood comes from volunteer blood donors. Volunteers are trained to register blood donors and label the collection packs (blood bags). They also staff a canteen where they serve juice and cookies and observe the donors to make sure they are feeling fine before they go home.
Transportation - Our local Red Cross has a unique program which provides local transportation to out of county medical appointments for those who have no other way to get there. Volunteers, using Red Cross vehicles, drive passengers to specialized care locations outside the county.
