Hazel K Snow Award
Hazel (Mrs. Clair E.) Snow's Red Cross service spanned more than 40 years. Her family's move to Ben Lomond in the mid-50's brought Hazel's skills and energies to Santa Cruz Chapter in 1957.  For the next 27 years, until her death in 1984 at age 88, she devoted her primary attention to developing and coordinating our chapter's exemplary blood program. More than 75,000 units of blood were collected in her years of leadership. She was instrumental in forming the Blood Clubs in the days of the credit system when it was required that blood used be replaced.

Her work was known and acclaimed nationally as well as regionally and locally. In fact, the Hazel K. Snow Award trophy is identical to one awarded Hazel herself in 1978. Santa Cruz Chapter perpetuated the award in her name in 1980 to recognize each year a volunteer "who goes the extra mile."

The Roundtree Award
The Roundtree Award is created as a continuing honor for Mr. Edward T. Rountree and his wife, Bertha, in recognition of their long service to the Red Cross. Mrs. Rountree was a volunteer in Blood Services at Ft. Ord and Santa Cruz from 1961 to 1980. Recruited by his wife from his retirement, Mr. Rountree has volunteered his services to the Chapter since 1962. He began as an "errand boy" at age sixty-six and soon contributed his professional expertise in establishing the present accounting system. In addition to his responsibilities in the accounting department, Mr. Rountree served on the Board of Directors and was Chapter Treasurer.

Mr. Rountree's technical contribution has been immense; his personal contribution is immeasurable, for he embodies the dedication, inspiration, and modesty that exemplify the spirit of volunteerism in the American Red Cross.
